Healthcare in the UK

The UK boasts one of the world’s most prestigious healthcare systems, the National Health Service (NHS), established in 1948. Funded by taxation, the NHS provides comprehensive, mostly free healthcare services to all legal residents. It’s a leader in medical research and hosts esteemed hospitals and professionals. The NHS is the largest employer in the UK, and across the UK, there are approximately 1,148 hospitals: 704 in England, 105 in Scotland, 84 in Wales, and 37 in Northern Ireland.

In addition to the NHS, the UK offers a robust private healthcare sector, providing an alternative for those seeking quicker access to treatments, more personalised care, and a broader choice of specialists. Private healthcare complements the NHS, ensuring a comprehensive range of options for patients.

Working within the NHS offers the chance to be part of a globally respected institution, renowned for its milestones and achievements in healthcare. As an NHS employee, you will have access to free healthcare services, a benefit few countries offer.
