Non-Medical Prescribers

We place experienced, V300-qualified non-medical prescribers into NHS mental health trusts, community mental health services, CAMHS and specialist settings across the UK – on locum and permanent contracts.

Welcome to Hunter Gatherer Mental Health, your specialist partner for mental health NMP recruitment across the UK.

Non-medical prescribers are one of the most sought-after clinician types in mental health services. Services need practitioners who can prescribe safely and autonomously – reducing dependency on consultant psychiatrists for routine medication management, running their own prescribing clinics, and supporting complex patients with medications that require careful monitoring. We connect experienced mental health NMPs with NHS trusts, specialist services and independent providers, and help clinicians find roles that match their prescribing scope and clinical background.

What is a Mental Health Non-Medical Prescriber?

A non-medical prescriber (NMP) in mental health is a registered healthcare professional – typically a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN), but also including pharmacists, occupational therapists, and other HCPC or NMC registrants – who holds the independent prescribing qualification (V300) and is annotated on their professional register as an independent prescriber.

In mental health settings, NMPs prescribe psychotropic medication, conduct medication reviews, run prescribing clinics, and support patients with complex medication regimes – often operating as the primary prescriber within a community or specialist team, working collaboratively with consultant psychiatrists for complex cases. The role significantly extends prescribing capacity in services where psychiatrist availability is limited, reduces delays for patients who need medication reviews, and supports safer, more responsive medication management across mental health caseloads.

Mental health NMPs typically work at Band 7 or above. The complexity of the medications involved – antipsychotics, mood stabilisers, clozapine, depot injections, ADHD medications, antidepressants in complex presentations – and the patient populations seen in mental health services mean that relevant clinical experience is as important as the prescribing qualification itself.

Why Services Choose Hunter Gatherer for Mental Health NMP Recruitment:

  • Prescribing scope confirmed before placement The V300 independent prescribing annotation on a professional register is non-negotiable. We also confirm the scope of each candidate’s actual prescribing experience – psychotropics, clozapine, lithium, depot antipsychotics, ADHD medication – so you know exactly what you’re getting before they start.

  • Mental health clinical background verified Prescribing safely in mental health requires more than the annotation. We only place NMPs with substantive mental health clinical experience appropriate to the setting – CMHT, inpatient, CAMHS, addictions, forensic, perinatal – and we match on this, not just the qualification.

  • Locum and permanent placements Short-term prescribing cover or a long-term hire to build NMP capacity in your service – we support both.

Qualifications We Look For:

Every NMP we place holds:

  • Active NMC registration (RMN most commonly, or other NMC registrants) or HCPC registration, with no conditions or restrictions
  • V300 Independent Prescriber annotation confirmed on the NMC or HCPC register – we verify this directly
  • Minimum Band 7 equivalent clinical experience in mental health, with relevant prescribing experience in the setting and medication class required
  • Valid enhanced DBS and current mandatory training
  • Evidence of active prescribing practice – the annotation alone is not sufficient; we confirm recent prescribing activity and relevant medicines knowledge
  • For clozapine prescribing roles: specific clozapine training and experience as required by the service
  • For CAMHS roles: mental health prescribing experience with children and young people and familiarity with relevant safeguarding and consent frameworks (Gillick competency, parental responsibility)

Locum NMP Opportunities in Mental Health:

Mental health NMP locum work is one of the most financially rewarding areas of mental health nursing and allied health prescribing. Services need experienced prescribers who can contribute safely from day one, and the shortage of qualified mental health NMPs means that experienced practitioners are in sustained demand across NHS and independent providers.

Whether you want a short-term locum block alongside a permanent role, a longer-term arrangement covering a prescribing gap in a CMHT, or a new permanent NMP position in a specialist mental health service, we’ll find the right opportunities for your background and prescribing scope.

We have active mental health NMP requirements across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Mental Health NMP Pay Rates (2025/26):

Mental health NMPs most commonly work at Band 7, earning £35–£50 per hour as a locum depending on setting, specialism and location. NMPs in specialist or senior roles – Band 8a equivalents, clozapine leads, perinatal prescribers, consultant-level NMPs – typically earn £48–£65 per hour.

Permanent salaried Band 7 mental health NMP roles run from £47,810 to £54,710 (2025/26). Band 8a senior or specialist NMP positions start at £55,690.

Independent and private mental health providers, Right to Choose services, and specialist clinics often offer rates above NHS-capped equivalents for experienced prescribers. Our consultants can advise on current going rates for your registration, prescribing scope and region.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Do you place NMPs from professional backgrounds other than nursing? Yes. While most mental health NMPs are RMNs, we also place pharmacist independent prescribers, occupational therapists and other HCPC registrants with the V300 qualification and relevant mental health prescribing experience. Let us know your professional background when you register.

  • Is the V300 annotation on the register the only thing that matters? No – and this matters for safety. The V300 annotation confirms you completed the training, but services need NMPs who have active, current prescribing experience in the relevant medications and clinical context. We confirm both, and won’t put you forward for a clozapine clinic role if your prescribing experience has been limited to antidepressants in primary care.

  • Do you place NMPs in CAMHS prescribing roles? Yes. CAMHS NMP roles are among the most specialist placements we make. They require familiarity with age-specific medication protocols, Gillick competency, parental consent, and ADHD/psychosis prescribing in children and young people. We confirm relevant CAMHS prescribing experience during registration.

  • Can you cover short-notice NMP prescribing gaps? Yes – prescribing gaps are exactly the kind of urgent, high-stakes requirement we specialise in. Once a prescriber is registered and compliant with us, we can respond quickly. Contact us directly for time-critical cover needs.

  •  What areas do you cover? We place mental health NMPs across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Bristol, Glasgow, Cardiff, Edinburgh and beyond.
